Jesus Christ the Word and Light of the World

"Jesus Christ is the light of the world because he is the source of the light which 'proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space.' His light is the true light that eightieth every man that cometh into the world. The scriptures call this universal light, 'the light of truth', 'the light of Christ', and the 'Spirit of Christ'. This is the light that quickens our understanding. It is 'the light by which we may judge,' it 'is given to every man, that he may know good from evil.' (Moroni 7:16) Jesus Christ is also the light of the world because his example and his teachings illuminate the path we should walk to return to the presence of our Father in Heaven. Before Jesus was born, Zacharias prophesied that the Lord God of Israel would visit his people 'to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide their feet into the way of peace...Jesus Christ is also the light of the world because His power persuades us to do good...I wish that everyone could understand our belief and bear testimony that Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Redeemer, is the light and life of the world." -Elder Dallin H. Oaks

After quoting John 1:6-8, (he) explained that these passages describe the purpose of John the Baptist's ministry: 'The immediate purpose of John the Baptist was to bear witness that Jesus was the true light, the true teacher of the way of life eternal, and to invite men to believe in Him for the remission of their sins and to be baptized. John the Baptist was not the Messiah or the leader of a great movement; he was the herald and witness, bearing testimony to the nature and divine titles of Jesus, and the witness through whom God attested the divine sonship of Jesus." -Howard W. Hunter

The most important truth the Holy Ghost will ever witness to you is that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God. -Russell M. Nelson

Jesus was the firstborn of the Father in the spirit world. (D&C 93:21) He was like unto God among the spirits gathered "before the world was' (Abraham 3:22-24) and He was chosen by the Father from the beginning (Moses 4:2).

The Father operated through the Son, who thus became the executive through whom the will, commandment, or word of the Father was put into effect. It is with incisive appropriateness therefore, that the Son, Jesus Christ is designated by the Apostle Joh as the word, or declared by the Father 'the word of my power." -James E. Talmadge

Christ is he word or messenger of salvation. Thus John's meaning is: 'in pre-existence (pre-mortal) was Chris, and Christ was with the Father, and he, the Son, had himself also attained godhood; (John 1:1-2, D&C 93:7-8). Further, the gospel itself is the word, and it is because the gospel or word of salvation is in Christ that he, on the principle of personification becomes the word." -Bruce R. McConkie
